Apple has submitted 3D patent applications in the past and another intriguing one has passed over the desk of the US Patent and Trademark Office this week.
The document entitled “Systems and Methods for an Imaging System Using Multiple Image Sensors” (catchy title, hey?) and outlines a method for producing 3D pictures using a hardware-based approach with dual cameras in an iPhone or iPod touch combined with seperate luma, chroma and depth/distance sensors…

As with the Nintendo 3DS, Apple would need to encorporate a 3D display into any future iPhone applying the technology in the new patent application. This is definitely not an innovation we’d expect to see incorporated into the iPhone 5 at any rate, whenever that device breaks cover.
