Microsoft Zune has reached the end of the road: EOL?According to a piece in Bloomberg this afternoon the end is coming for the Microsoft Zune. Since 2006, the media player has failed to gain enough traction to battle the Apple iPod at the cash register and now Microsoft is ready to pull the plug. Amidst mild demand, new versions of the Zune will no longer be released.

Microsoft has been talking up Windows Phone 7 and Kinect a lot recently but Zune? Zune has been stuck in the corner relatively unloved. That may be set to change.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley spotted that Microsoft is employing staff for a cloud-based music and video project dubbed Ventura. Job postings describe the Ventura project as a “tight group of music and video lovers that create services and experiences revolving around music/video discovery and consumption”.

Microsoft is readying itself for the launch of Windows Phone 7, and has announced improvements and additions to its Zune services. The Microsoft Zune service will be boosted across Windows Phone 7, PC, and Xbox 360 Live, adding a Zune Pass unlimited music download service, plus Zune Marketplace and Zune software expansion.
