The uncanny valley is the idea, posed by a Japanese robotics professor, that as humanoid robots start to resemble us more and more, we warm to them. But there’s a point where sudden repulsion kicks in: the more they look like us, the more we realise they don’t.

It’s like playing Fallout 3, and being grossed out by the NPC’s freaky frown lines, or LA Noire and wondering why every female character’s hair appears to be made of papier mache. It isn’t human.

It’s precisely what’s wrong with Android tablets like the Motorola Xoom 2. Honeycomb is starting to resemble a viable tablet option, but it still doesn’t feel quite right.

The Motorola Xoom 2 has been a poorly kept secret, but it’s now finally official, and we got to spend some time with it today ahead of its launch in the UK and Ireland in a couple of weeks. Unlike the smaller, delightful Media Edition, it’s sticking with the old 10.1-inch form factor, and in a bid to make it distinct, Moto has stuffed it full of business apps. Will it replace the laptop in your briefcase?

A glimpse of what appeared to be the Motorola Xoom 2 popped up on the Motorola site last month. Now more rumours around the Motorola Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet have emerged. Notebook Italia suggests the new Motorola Android tablet will have a 10in 4:3 screen with a 2048×1536 resolution.

The report claims the Motorola Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet is already in the hands of testers and is set for launch late this year or early 2012. It’s not clear whether the device will come with the Xoom name slapped on it this time but since Motorola and NVIDIA are very cosy, it’s likely to come with a quad-core Kal El Tegra 3 processor inside.

Motorola Xoom 2 spotted in Verizon Wireless video ad?A video released by Verizon Wireless yesterday shows off what looks to be the successor to the Motorola Xoom, the Xoom 2. The tablet in question lacks the trademark Motorola M branding and uses a different camera than the current Xoom. Is this the quadcore Kal-el (Tegra 3) Xoom 2 currently in development?

There’s nothing like a tablet mystery to close out the work week. Moments after releasing the video on YouTube, Verizon quickly turned the video private, only adding fuel to the speculation that this is the Motorola Xoom 2.

If there was any doubt a Motorola Xoom 2 Android tablet was in the works, consider it put to rest. Pocketnow managed to snag some screengrabs of unreleased products that appeared on Motorola Mobility’s website for a few minutes this week, and holed up in the corner of one of them is the Motorola Xoom 2.

Not much is known about this device, and from the corner of it we can see it still appears to sport the curved edges and black bezel. Sadly, the device is off, so we can’t see what it’s running. We’re hoping Motorola is waiting for the next big Android OS update, Ice Cream Sandwich, due towards the end of the year. Fingers crossed!
