Deep down, I knew this was going to happen. Rumours had been swirling for weeks that BBC iPlayer wouldn’t be working at full capacity on the Xbox 360’s new TV service. But the official confirmation that the service won’t land on Microsoft’s console until ‘early 2012’ is nothing short of infuriating. I’m sure that when it does launch, it’ll work like a dream. But the fact is we’ve been waiting far too long for this to happen. Microsoft needs to buck its ideas up if it wants to prove that it’s capable of offering a service to rival the PS3, Boxee Box, Apple TV and even the Nintendo Wii.

Lovefilm’s movie streaming biz has been growing steadily since Amazon decided to buy it up. The Lovefilm Instant service is now available on PCs, PS3, iPads and smart TVs, but there’s one prime candidate that’s always been missing: The Xbox 360. Kinect has been a huge success for Microsoft in Europe and the US, with millions of sales and  gamers making it the fastest selling gadget of all time when it was released late last year. But it seems Japanese gamers are not having any of it, with new figures showing that the motion control camera has sold a mere 114,000 units in its first year on sale.

Microsoft Kinect is getting beefed up for 2012. The motion sensor is undoubtedly a powerful piece of kit, but it’s currently limited to what the now aging Xbox 360 can process. Despite Kinect packing its own GPU, it’s hampered by the console it’s bound to, which is why Microsoft wants to move the future of the Kinect tech to your desktop in 2012. And not for gaming. Microsoft has just announced a big ol’ bunch of TV channels and on-demand services coming to the Xbox 360 in the UK. Lots of players are coming to the console including YouTube, Lovefilm and a couple of the terrestrial broadcasters. And guess what? Even the BBC is confirmed as a partner.
