Windows 7 has hit its first stumbling block, one which could blow up to be as big as the ‘Vista Capable’ kafuffle. The much hyped XP Mode software, which allows Windows 7 to run old software designed for Windows XP, won’t run on certain kinds of Intel processors. And the real snag is that these incompatible chipsets can be found inside some of the most popular computers available today.

Microsoft wasn’t expected to display its wares until after Steve Ballmer’s keynote speech tonight at CES in Las Vegas, but the Redmond giant obviously couldn’t wait, as it was busy showing off Windows 7 on an Eee at the Asus press conference last night.
The Linux toting version of the Aspire One has been available for a while, if you know where to look, but if all that open source is making you itch fear not as Acer has released the official XP drivers so you can perform the upgrade yourself.
Microsoft may be trying to move everyone onto Vista, but it just can’t seem to cut its ties with Windows XP once and for all. It’ll still be available for the small, cheap PC market – there’s even a special version: Windows XP Home Edition ULCPC.
Microsoft is still pushing ahead with its plans to squeeze heavy weight OS XP onto the light and nimble OLPC XO laptop that’s designed for the developing world. The results? Well, it’s not as sluggish as it could be but it’s no match for the Linux based Sugar OS when it comes to speed.
So, you got your heart all set on an MSI Wind and then, once they finally got here, they sold out faster than super phone with shockingly bad battery life. But fear not, Sainsbury’s has bagged a load of rebadged Medion models that could be yours for but £299.
