Long before Windows Phone 7 Mango bore fruit, Windows Mobile 6.5 phones like the HTC HD2 were left behind. But backslashsid, a member of the XDA-Developers forum, thought that was unfair and has managed to port the Windows Phone 7 Mango Beta 1 to the device.

Keeping up its recent more lenient attitude to hardware hackers, Microsoft spokesman Bill Cox told AllThingsD: “We say tinker away with Mango and enjoy the juice. But beware the fine print – unlocking phones may void your warranty.”

Windows Mobile 7 is due to arrive this year but excellently named Russian Windows Mobile obsessive Eldar Murtazin has apparently got his hands on it already. Read on for a glimpse of Win Mobs future…
Murtazin reports that Windows Mobile 7’s UI is “more complicated” than the ZuneHD’s, putting us in mind of those Zune phone rumours again.
The look of Windows Mobile 7 is apparently heavily inspired by Google Android and the iPhone (no surprises there really).
Murtazin reported that version of Windows Mobile 7 he got a glimpse of was a very early build but predicts that it will be show, perhaps in closed meetings, at Mobile World Congress in February.
The big news is that Windows Mobile 7 seems to be incompatible with Windows Mobile 6 apps. Murtazin reports that the handset he used would not run any Windows Mobile 6 apps and that the OS was “built from scratch”.
Electricpig will be out in force at Mobile World Congress to hunt down the latest scoop on Windows Mobile’s next move.

Microsoft has officially responded to rumours that a journalist was told that using or mentioning Apple products at it’s events was “banned”.
The incident took place at an event held by Samsung and Microsoft Germany to promote Windows 6.5. A journalist was told off for saying his iPhone was the best phone he’d ever used.
Microsoft has now released an official statement making it clear that it’s fine with people talking about and mentioning Apple products at its events.
A Microsoft spokesperson told Ars Technica: “We’ve been unable to confirm the specific exchange, it would not reflect our overall company policy and business practices. Reporters and analysts are free to use whatever technology they wish…and always have been.”
It’s good that Microsoft has cleared the air but we do remember its big boss, Steve Ballmer, being a little less tolerant…

Microsoft is apparently feeling a little tetchy about Apple. A report in a German newspaper suggests Microsoft Germany banned journalists from mentioning Apple during a press event.
According to German publication Handelsblatt, a journalist at the Windows 6.5 event was given a severe talking to by a Microsoft PR person after talking about just how much he loves his iPhone.
9to5Mac’s (admittedly rusty translation) says: “While at a Windows 6.5 demonstration in Munich, Germany, a journalist was warned by a Microsoft spokesman not to mention or use Apple products since it was a Microsoft event. The journalist had previously told everyone that he had never owned an easier to use cell phone than the iPhone.”
We’d probably agree with him. But maybe Microsoft should have offered him an HTC HD2 for comparison.
