Today, Microsoft has revealed a tremendous amount of insight over on the Windows Phone Developer Blog, confirming the number of apps (11,500) and just about every other statistic we could have hoped to track down. In less than two months the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has managed to accumulate more than 5,000 applications. An achievement that tops the number of available apps in Palm’s App Catalog. It took Palm nearly 18 months to reach this point and at the current pace, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace could surpass the BlackBerry App World in the next six months.

Windows Marketplace for Mobile is Microsoft’s new app store (note lowercase) for Windows Mobile devices. Unlike certain other App Stores, Microsoft has published some clear guidelines about apps that it will reject out of hand.
Windows Mobile 6.5 is set to be a much prettier OS than its predecessor with Microsoft announcing a series of Themes created by top designers. Microsoft has also unveiled plans for the Windows Marketplace and some of the ‘partners’ who will be publishing apps there on opening day.
