Windows 8, that crazy, mobile-inspired revamp of Microsoft’s desktop operating system, will be getting a full public beta release in February. That’s according to sources close to The Next Web, and it gives us a clue as to when we might see the final version released.

Does that new Xbox 360 Dashboard look nice to you? Me too. Microsoft’s been very uncharacteristic, of late. It’s suddenly started to produce products that can be genuinely described as ‘attractive’, ‘enjoyable’ and ‘well thought-out’. Thanks to some talented (and presumably new) user interface designers, Microsoft’s about to see a 2012 where everything it offers is exceptionally pretty – a 2012 where it could very well claw the ‘coolness’ top spot of tech status symbols away from Apple for the first time ever. Asus’s Jerry Shen’s belief that Windows 8’s ‘familiar user interface’ will be capable of defeating the iPad certainly doesn’t come as a surprise. This is the same man, after all, who talked up the idea of an Asus MeeGo laptop just six months ago. Shen runs one of the gadget world’s most successful and innovative companies, but his public pronouncements should always be taken with a pinch of salt.

So his assertion that Windows 8 would turn the tablet space on its head is bizarre at best. Because even if Windows 8 has potential, it’ll need to be perfect the minute it comes out of the gate if Microsoft is going to make even the smallest dent in Apple’s epic lead.
