The Android 3.1 update rollout currently underway promises performance improvements, browser stability, new USB device support and Movies. Unfortunately, owners of the Motorola Xoom WiFi edition are reporting the Movies tab is not available inside the Android Market. It appears Verizon Wireless customers with their 3G variant will be receiving the royal treatment this time around.
As luck would have it, the day I installed Skype for Android on the Motorola Xoom, a security breach was discovered. Today, I’m happy to report Skype has done us a solid, updating the security of the app thereby restoring peace and unity to Android. For US users, Skype voice calling now supports 3G regardless of carrier, effectively ending Verizon’s reign of terror over free VoIP.
Just when you thought the original Galaxy Tab had reached the finish line in its product cycle, Samsung throws us a curveball. A WiFi-only edition of the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab will debut next week (April 10) in the US for $349. We know its iPad 2 day but if you’re rocking a Kindle, here’s a bit of good news: the Kindle is getting access to 50,000 Audible audiobooks for direct download via WiFi.
Sure it’s not 3G but it’s a good move and a big improvement over USB sideloading which we were stuck with before. Audible subscriptions are great if you have a long commute and being able to just carry the Kindle could come in very handy.
Amidst the onslaught of iPad 2 news and reviews, it’s time to break ground in the Android department. According to leaked images from droid-life, the WiFi-only Samsung Galaxy Tab will be released on April 4th and priced at $399. Unfortunately it appears Android 2.2 Froyo is still in tow and there’s no word on a Honeycomb upgrade date.
