Oh, HP TouchPad and HP Pre 3, we hardly knew you! Over night, HP announced that it’s killing off its webOS devices and plans to spin-off its PC division as a seperate entity while the bulk of HP turns towards enterprise software with the acquisition of British firm Autonomy.

While the devices are dead, This Is My Next reports that webOS boss Stephen DeWitt repeatedly told employees: “We are not walking away from webOS.” But though HP is making all the right noises about licensing or selling webOS, who might pick up the baton? Can webOS really live on?

Dropping Sprint from the HP Pre 3 launch was the smart moveWe still believe the launch of the HP Pre 3 is on track for late August. In breaking news this weekend it was revealed that Sprint, the exclusive carrier of the original Palm Pre in the US, would not be releasing the Pre 3 and that HP has no plans of offering any future devices on the Now Network. While the news was undoubtedly a major disappointment for Sprint webOS users, this might be the first sign that Palm finally understands the recipe for smartphone success.

HP Pre 3 set for August 31 release: bad news for webOSThe big brother to the HP Veer, the Pre 3, is now slated for an August 31 release date according to Play.com. While this still falls into the “summer season” promised by HP, previous reports suggested we’d see the webOS flagship by mid-July. Without the Pre 3, touch to share with the HP TouchPad remains a pipe dream unless you own the Veer. Will a late August release of the HP Pre 3 spell disaster for webOS?

The first generation of any hardware is going to be riddled with bugs. Apple’s original round iMac mouse was awkward to orientate, then along came the Mighty Mouse with right click and a scroll ball that broke after a week, but now we have the Magic Mouse, which is a dream to use. We’re hoping HP’s Touchpad undergoes a similar evolution.

Because it’s a promising offering, with a great OS and some functionality you won’t see anywhere else. So what does HP need to learn to improve it?
