The news that Steve Jobs has resigned as Apple CEO is shocking in a way but not surprising. Back in January when Jobs announced that he was to take a second leave of absence on medical grounds, I wrote a piece called “Steve Jobs and how Apple will work without him“. It was premature than and is still a little premature now with Jobs remaining as Apple’s chairman but I stick by its conclusion: Apple itself is Steve Jobs’ greatest product.
When Jobs took control of Apple again in 1997, he set about changing the company from a disorganised and unfocused entity into a machine for innovation. Products, even game changing ones like the iPhone or iPad, have relatively short life spans but in building his top team at Apple and propagating his business philosophy so throughly through the organisation, Steve Jobs has secured the company’s future.
