The wait is over. Our friends at Nokia Beta Labs have just released an update to the N8’s native camera application. The update, available free at the Beta Labs website, adds support for continuous auto focus and 30fps video recording. First a Symbian Anna update and now a camera update? Not a bad month for the Symbian flagship if you ask us.
It’s no secret the Nokia N8 has an incredible camera. Up until today its video capabilities trailed behind the still photography. Taking the video recording speed from 25fps to 30fps opens the door to capturing fast-action video clips. Combined with continuous auto focus, the N8 not only replaces your point and shoot camera, it also replaces an entry-level video camera.
The Nokia E6 has been two years in the in the waiting, if not the making. It’s taken Nokia since 2009 to replace its flagship portrait QWERTY phone, the Nokia E72, and it’s only now, as the company dumps Symbian for Windows Phone, that it’s finally refreshed the form factor.
Can Symbian’s touted Anna update and a sharper screen help it stand out for the crowd in 2011? We take a look in our Nokia E6 review.
The Nokia Oro isn’t intended for the likes of you or I, it’s a play-thing for the cash-rich, for those who like the idea of owning a smartphone but only if it’s dripping in gold and jewels. Costing twice the price of a Nokia C7, on which it’s based, is this smartphone a ‘bad boy’ or just ‘bad taste’? Find out with our Nokia Oro smartphone review.
As the saying goes, “you’ve got to pay to play.” Nokia has reportedly embraces this philosophy with grand plans of an £80M ad campaign to kick of sales of its Windows Phone devices. Microsoft fully supports the initiative with “dreams and aspirations” of selling 100 million units per year “with that single deal”. For a company whose U.S. market share fell 35 percent since the launch of Windows Phone in November, 100 million units per year sounds a tad high or is it?
Ever wonder which apps drive the UK mobile market? GSMA and comScore have revealed that nearly 8.8 million UK mobile owners used an app that connected to the Internet during April 2011. Google Maps took top honors with 6.4 million unique visitors while Yahoo! Weather finished second with 3.6 million.
Surprisingly the world’s most popular social networking site, Facebook, finished third with 3.5 million unique visitors. Google Mobile and YouTube rounded out the top five with 2.6 million and 2.4 million respectively.
Nokia Connect is in full swing and first on the agenda is redefining the company’s mobile strategy. The Nokia C2-02, C2-03, C2-06 and N9 are just the tip of the iceberg for the Finnish giant.
Nokia’s new strategy begins with its commitment to Series 40 through the trio of C2 launches. In July, Symbian Anna will debut as Nokia N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s will ship pre-loaded with the latest build. By the end of August existing owners will be able to download the update.
The Nokia N8 touts one of the best, if not the best, cameras we’ve seen on a smartphone. Thanks to a 12-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics, taking professional-grade photos on the go is easier than ever before.
An update to the N8 is rumored to be coming soon. With it brings 30fps video recording, up from 25fps, and continuous auto-focus. The latter is one of the most highly coveted features for DSLR users hoping to replace a HD video camera.
