final-fantasy-13-2-6

Before I get to Final Fantasy 13-2, let me explain a few things.

There are three things I don’t understand in life. Economics is the most gaping chasm in my knowledge: if Greece is bankrupt, why doesn’t it just print more money?

The second is why Square-Enix keeps refusing to remake Final Fantasy 7, the best video game of the 1990s, but is happy to rehash Chrono Trigger, the second best game of the 1990s, on Nintendo DS and iPhone.

The third, by coincidence, also relates to the Japanese gaming giant. I can’t comprehend why it would amalgamate elements from both these iconic titles, then try and staple them on to the sequel of the worst single player entry in the Final Fantasy series so far.

It’s been such a long wait for Final Fantasy Versus 13 that it almost feels mythical now. The game has been on the cards since 2006 and we heard in August last year that the Final Fantasy Versus 13 release date was unlikely to fall in 2011. Now, game director and Final Fantasy character artist, Tetsuya Nomura, has raised the game in an interview.

Speaking to Dengeki PlayStation in Japan, Nomura says Final Fantasy Versus 13 will not be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show in September which is disappointing. However, he confirms that a date has been set to show the game in public, once again raising the prospect of a release. Thankfully with Square Enix celebrating Final Fantasy’s 25th birthday this year, we can still expect plenty of announcements at the Tokyo Game Show to distract us.

Over a year since Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy Tactics would hit the iPhone, it’s actually arrive. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is a port from the PSP title and is a pretty substantial download at 457MB. It’s now in the App Store for £10.99, which is a lot more than most iPhone games but probably fair given the number of hours of gameplay you’ll get from it.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is optimised for the iPhone and iPod touch right now but Square Enix says the iPad version will be out in the autumn. To celebrate the release, it has also slashed the prices of lots of its other titles on the App Store, including Final Fantasy: Chaos Rings. Take a look here to find other titles that have benefited from a price drop.

Good news for retro gaming fans: Sony has announced that it’s planning to bring classic Japanese and US PlayStation One titles to Europe via the PlayStation Network. The decision means that publishers who still own the rights to their PlayStation One games will be able to apply to have them release here provided they’ve been rated.

Sony says the PlayStation One titles will hit the PlayStation Network “as is” which means some might require you to brush up on your Japanese. All the re-released games will run at 60Hz, so you’ll also need a display that can handle that.

The move already looks promising for fans of long-lost JRPGS. Ross McGrath of the Sony PlayStation Store team says he’s already been in contact with Square-Enix about delving into its catalogue.

The last time we heard about Final Fantasy Type-O, it was among a clutch of Final Fantasy titles with mysterious English phrases mixed into their promo material. Now a video trailer for the PSP title has been released and it’s five minutes of frenetic action to feast your eyes on.

While the dialogue in the Final Fantasy Type-O trailer is all in Japanese, it’s still well worth a watch for any Final Fantasy fan with a good look at the game’s real time battle system and all the usual Square Enix character types on show. Click through to take a look and cross your fingers that Final Fantasy Type-O will make its way west some time after its October 13 release in Japan…

Square Enix RPG classic Final Fantasy 3 has hit the iPhone App Store, so you’ll be able to get your turn based combat grove on on the go. Unfortunately, it’s accompanied by an eye watering price tag of £9.49, which is almost four times the price of the iPhone versions of the first two Final Fantasy outings, which we reviewed last year.

The difference is however that this is the remade, spruced up 3D version of the game that was launched to much praise on the Nintendo DS in 2006 – even with the rosiest tinted glasses on, NES graphics did not look like that.

It seems Square Enix is getting serious about iPhone, iPad and Android development with a brand new studio called Hippos Lab which is dedicated entirely to developing games for mobile platforms.

Hippos Lab kicked off on March 7 and has been working on a title since then with a release due soon. Square Enix has had plenty of success in the iTunes App Store with Final Fantasy titles and their real-time strategy title Sliding Heroes. There’s also lots of price cuts on Square Enix titles in the App Store right now which is good news for Final Fantasy fans.
