Morning. Tired? Don’t worry – we’re only 21 days from the shortest day of the year. If you’ve been too bleary-eyed to soak up as much tech news as you’d like, you’ve come to the right place; let us walk you through what you’ve missed.
Sonos, the wireless music streaming gurus, are serving up a series of software updates today that should have hi-fi fans and music services alike in a tizzy. The Sonos Android app has been giving a Honeycomb update, but it’s the open API to let any song service plug into the multi-room Sonos system that’s got our interest picqued.
If you’ve been enviously eyeing a friend’s Sonos system but were didn’t have the cash to splash out on even the Sonos S5, here’s some good news. Sonos has just launched the Sonos Play:3, a dinky music streamer that will set you back just £259, almost £100 less than its previous all-in-one, the Sonos S5.
You’ll still also need a Sonos Bridge to set up your system unless you want to tie your Sonos Play:3 down with an ethernet cable but the price of that has also been slashed by half to £39. Read on for all the details on the Sonos Play:3 including why it comes packing an orientation sensor…
The Sonos Android app for controlling multi-room audio from your Google blower has just gone live on the Android Market. It’s a free download for all Android 2.1 and up phones with a HVGA resolution or higher display (No plans yet for Honeycomb tablet support), and offers all of the functionality of the iPhone app, plus volume control with your phone’s volume rocker, and voice search.
The Sonos iPhone app and iPad app are getting a bumper update today. At long last, the high end audio streaming gurus have added multitasking support, but that’s not all – you can now stream music to your Sonos systems via AirPlay, and perhaps more usefully, in-app audio as well. There is however, one teeny tiny thing you ought to know.
The Sonos Controller for Android was meant to arrive at the end of March but we’re here and it’s not. Sonos’ VP of Quality has popped up on the firm’s forums to explain why:
“We know you’re anxiously awaiting the Sonos Controller for Android. Unfortunately, testing the app is taking a bit longer than we anticipated. The latest addition to our free controller-line up won’t arrive until April but when it does, it is going to rock.”
That’s encouraging and we hope that April deadline sticks!
