Today Sky revealed plans to launch a new internet TV service. Arriving by the middle of this year, this service will allow anyone with a broadband connection to access Sky’s programming through pretty much any device: computer, set-top box, connected TV, games console, tablet, smartphone, you name it. And unlike the current Sky Go service, customers won’t have to subscribe: if they fancy watching a film one evening, they can rent only that film; there’s no requirement to purchase a monthly pass.

But while Sky’s service could put the willies up the likes of Netflix and Lovefilm, Apple could be the company that really loses out as a result. Why? Well, Sky just turned everything into a Sky box.

UPDATE: Sky has confirmed to Electricpig that the Sky Go Android app does not require Adobe Flash. That points to faster performance, but does also make the small range of supported devices rather puzzling.

The Sky Go Android app for watching the broadcaster’s channels on the go will arrive by the end of February, BSkyB announced today. There’s just one little catch: while every recent iOS device supports it, only a handful of Android phones will to start with. Is yours one of them?

Sky has announced that the BBC iPlayer and ITV Player on demand services will roll out to Sky customers later this year, as part of an ongoing expansion of the Anytime+ on demand feature. The services will be available to up to 5 million Sky+HD customers direct through their living room TV.
