Amazon to purchase two million touch panels, but is this too many?Many have tried, many have failed. According to DigiTimes, Amazon has made the bold move of ordering between 1.5 and two million touch panels for its upcoming tablet line. Allegedly, the company plans to ship four million tablets by the end of 2011. While ambitious plans are commendable, we’d be remiss if we didn’t question whether Amazon was overestimating demand?

We know there’s been false alarms on this before but Samsung has confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy S family is getting its taste of Android Gingerbread finally. The UK and the Nordic countries are named as the first lucky recipients with the update set to arrive here from the middle of this month.

The rest of the globe will have to wait a little longer but every Samsung Galaxy is getting some love. As well as suping up the Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung’s constellation of budget Galaxy devices (including the Ace, Glo, Fit and mini) will get some Gingerbread love.

Sometimes Apple news makes me want to bang my head repeatedly on the desk. I’ve been told to stop doing it by my doctor as I was risking a permanent groove in my forehead. The latest bit of tittle tattle that’s got me irritated is the surprise with which data from comScore that shows if you include iPad and iPod touch numbers, iOS is ahead of Android has been met.

Mark Donovan, senior vice president of mobile at comScore told the WSJ: “The finding is incredible because it shows that Android being the most popular smartphone is not the whole story…” That’s incredible? Did those guys just forget the iPod touch and iPad existed? I’d thought Apple’s iPad ads were pretty well inescapable. So why has the Android vs iPhone battle been consistently presented as a smartphone vs smartphone smackdown?
