Calm down. We’re not reviewing the year-old BlackBerry PlayBook for the first time. In case you’ve missed the first couple of rounds, I’m revisting the 7-inch slate to see if using it more, pimping it with apps and coming at it from new angles will stop me from wanting to spend £400 on the new iPad.

What? A review of a year-old product? I’ve decided to revisit my long-forgotten, oft-neglected PlayBook to see if, with the benefit of new apps, accessories and software, it can honestly keep me and my wallet from losing £400 on the new iPad. At £169, can it genuinely find a place as a cheap alternative? Over the next week I’ll be using RIM’s tablet religiously and reporting on a series of key areas.

Having posted terrible losses last night, the internet has been awash with rumours that the company is going to cease making BlackBerry devices for consumers in favour of a renewed focus its business-y strengths. At CES last month, VMWare showed off its plans to let you run your personal Android phone on your company’s IT network using the handy feat of virtualisation. At the time, the Palo Alto based company said that Telefonica was on board with its plans, and now the parent company of O2 has revealed the first phone that can make use of the tech. It’s a good one: meet the Samsung Galaxy S2, your new work phone.

Last September RIM announced that it would be bringing a movie streaming service to the PlayBook by the name of the BlackBerry Video Store. That service is officially launching at Mobile World Congress with the backing of content giant Rovi, bringing Blu-Ray skills to the 7-inch tablet. Read more

It’s long been rumoured that BlackBerry Messenger will eventually be released for iOS and Android, but one analyst now believes that’s very unlikely. Jefferies’ Peter Misek predicts that RIM will abandon its plans to develop BBM apps for competitors’ devices in favour of “direct competition” with them.
