The new iPad. Secretly, we all want one. We might not be about to go out and drop £400 on one, but we certainly wouldn’t turn a free one down. I know I wouldn’t. But hang on, what’s this? RIM’s 16GB PlayBook for £169? That’s pretty damn cheap. Can it, after all this time, see a second coming as an iPad rival? While James tests the new iPad out this week, I’m going to do my best to find out. Read more

The HTC One X, the Taiwanese company’s flagship phone for 2012, has a lot riding on it. Once the poster boy for Android, HTC has for the first time in years begun to see sales drop, as Samsung roars ahead with its phenomenally successful Galaxy S line.

Its last few releases have been mere iterations, with a tweaked processor or a needlessly super-sized screen. Floundering is too harsh a way to describe it. But the mojo density inside its mobiles has definitely dropped in the last year.

The HTC One X though, promises to change that. It’s the first mainstream phone to launch with Android 4.0 onboard since the Samsung Galaxy Nexus back in November, and it’s rocking a brand new look and impressive specs. Is it the sum of its parts? Let’s take a look.

We’ve been keeping an eye on the ZTE Tania Windows Phone over the past few months: long time readers will know we’ve heralded it as the start of a new era for Windows Phone, in the budget market. Compared to all the cheapo Android phones out there, a £150 Windows Phone on Pay As You Go gives a far more pleasant, hassle-free user experience.

Here’s the thing: it’s great. But there’s a problem: you can’t buy it anywhere.

xperia-s-review

Two years ago, Gizmodo ran a week of special coverage under the title “We Miss Sony”, a fascinating look at how the once proud Sony had lost its way. In a time where we all prostrate ourselves at the temple of Sir Jonathan Ive, it’s hard to believe that Sony used to be the trendsetter. I mean, Walkman.

But there’s a new CEO in town, and the fusty types at Ericsson are finally out of the picture. So it was with great hope that I picked up the Sony Xperia S last week, the first Sony branded phone in more than a decade, and the company’s first smartphone. Ever.

Has Sony got its act together? Has it united all its sprawling hardware and software fiefdoms under one generalissimo, and produced a winner in the Sony Xperia S?

In a word, er, no.

final-fantasy-13-2-6

Before I get to Final Fantasy 13-2, let me explain a few things.

There are three things I don’t understand in life. Economics is the most gaping chasm in my knowledge: if Greece is bankrupt, why doesn’t it just print more money?

The second is why Square-Enix keeps refusing to remake Final Fantasy 7, the best video game of the 1990s, but is happy to rehash Chrono Trigger, the second best game of the 1990s, on Nintendo DS and iPhone.

The third, by coincidence, also relates to the Japanese gaming giant. I can’t comprehend why it would amalgamate elements from both these iconic titles, then try and staple them on to the sequel of the worst single player entry in the Final Fantasy series so far.

klipsch-3

For the last few days, I’ve been testing the new Klipsch S4A headphones specifically designed for Android phones. They’re aimed at bringing decent, iPhone like in-line remote controls to Android, and as regular readers will know, I’m of the view that it desperately needs them.

Are they any good? Well, Android’s boss should definitely check them out.

We’ve just got hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Player here at CES, and we must say, it’s nice. What is clear though is that the Samsung Galaxy Player is a proper iPod touch pretender, but without as big a wallop when it comes to gaming. Click through for more photos.

The Samsung Omnia 7 is a sharply dressed Windows Phone 7. It is slick, but boxy too, in a cool metallic casing, with a 4” super AMOLED WVGA touchscreen, the covering for which stretches across the whole of the front of the device.
