Let me get the cold, hard, blunt bit out of the way: I don’t know why the Sony Xperia P exists. I know the market it’s aiming for, but I don’t know why Sony wants to go there. I’ve been using the handset for the past week for the purpose of this review, but it’s left me with more questions than answers. Chief among which: has Sony forgotten how to be Sony? Read more

Last week’s WWDC keynote saw the launch of iOS 6, as well as a rejig of Apple’s entire Mac line – including a brand new MacBook Pro with a thinner body, souped up specs and a Retina Display.

I’ve been testing it out for the last week and – quelle surprise – it’s amazing. The thing is, it’s so good it’s making the internet itself look bad.

Meet the Orange San Diego, a new Android phone that’s exclusive to the network. It’s the final, shipping name of the Orange Santa Clara phone that we profiled back in February. While we normally like to stress that it’s the software that counts these days, and not the hardware, it’s the silicon inside this phone that’s significant.

You see, this is the first phone in Europe to ever sport an Intel chip. The big beast of desktop computing has finally persuaded somebody to use its new mobile chip, so there’s a lot riding on this smartphone. Let’s take a look.

The Nokia Lumia 900 has much riding on it, perhaps even more than last year’s Lumia 800. It’s the first Lumia Windows Phone designed with the USA, home of the stretch hummer and ultra widescreen TV, in mind. Its huge 4.3-inch screen is designed to make it appeal to American tastes, and its blinding 4G connectivity is a real differentiator against an army of huge Android phones and the iPhone alike.

In the UK however, things are a little bit different. We’re still lacking 4G, and you can already buy a Nokia Windows Phone, the well-received Lumia 800. So what makes the Lumia 900 stand out?

The devil is a very busy man lately. He’s been on a tour of China, visiting upstart mobile phone manufacturers with a deal. You give me your soul, and I’ll show you how to make and sell an Android phone for an absurdly low price and still make a profit. There’s almost always a compromise somewhere: a terrible camera, shonky screen, creaky construction.

Thing is though, Satan’s being mugged off. With the arrival of the Huawei Ascend G300 on Vodafone, I’m really struggling to see where the catch is.

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks using RIM’s seemingly ill-fated PlayBook, to see just how ill-fated it actually is. At just £169, with new software, a raft of new apps and all the right accessories, can it finally be seen as a viable tablet alternative to the new iPad? I’m at the end of the journey now, so I need to make a decision… Read more

I’m on a one-man mission to find out if the BlackBerry PlayBook can act as a reasonable replacement to the new iPad, for the benefit of anyone who suddenly wants to join the tablet brigade but doesn’t want to spend their life savings. Today’s test: can the £169 PlayBook keep up with the iPad in terms of multimedia? Read on to find out. Read more

Time moves quickly in mobile. So much so that a sequel to a 2010 phone can seem like a blast from the past. The HTC One V is just that, a reminder of a time when Android phones weren’t just about the biggest screen size, at the expense of potential customers who weren’t NBA basketball players. It’s even brought HTC’s old trademark “chin” along for the ride.
