It’s often said that Apple doesn’t do market research. A New York Times piece from March this year reported Steve Jobs‘ response to what consumer and market research Apple does as: “None, it isn’t the customers’ job to know what they want.”

But it appears that Apple has begun a new campaign to test the waters with select customers through regular surveys. AppleInsider reports that customers have received emails asking them to complete a survey on what Apple products they own then inviting them to become members of the Apple Customer Pulse group…

iPhone location tracking is big news today after researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden revealed iPhone tracker, a data-mining tool that allows you to view a map plotting stored location data that your iPhone deposits on your Mac.

Rory Cellan-Jones was on the Today programme attempting to explain it to John Humphries and the web is full of people explaining how sinister Apple is. Only, it’s not sinister whatsoever and it’s no alone in saving that location data. It’s great fun for conspiracy theorists and opportunistic politicians to jump on the bandwagon but really, the story here is a) old and b) a lot less scary than the headlines might make you think…

Apple’s beauty isn’t alone in its bacteria friendly status though, mobile phones in general are apparently right little germ factories. PhonePoint Pen is an experimental new system for capturing gestures made with a mobile phone. While motion-sensing apps are nothing new, this is the first we have seen that actually lets you write letters in the air that your phone can read and understand.

Nokia Locate Sensor has just made its debut at CES 2009. The brainchild of the folk over at the Nokia Research Center, Locate Sensor is a prototype service designed to help ensure you never lose anything. You simply attach a physical wireless location tag (see photo gallery) to stuff such as your keys or wallet, and if you drop anything or it gets nicked from your pocket the accompanying Nokia Locate Sensor app points you in the direction of the item and even tells you how far away it is.

Research firm NPD Group has found, in a survey of usage by 3,200 handheld gamers in September, that most play their Sony PSP, Nintendo DS or Apple iPhone at home.

A new report from Verdict Research has revealed that video games sales in the UK are set to top music and video sales for the very first time this year. Consumer spending on games is expected to rise by 42% to reach £4.64 billion, leaving the combined force of music and video at £4.46bn.
