Acer chairman sees a slowdown to tablet fever; company posts first ever lossFor the first time ever, Acer has posted a net loss of £142m for the quarter ending in June. Company chairman J.T. Wang said that he sees a slowdown to the current wave of ‘tablet fever’. This, in part, explains the dip in sales of 32 percent from a year ago. Acer has explained the quarterly loss as a “correction period” plagued by severance pay, £91m to rid itself of excess inventory and £18 million to reorganize the company.

Apple tops the mobile PC Market, passes HP with 13.5m units shipped The latest findings from DisplayResearch show that Apple has passed HP in mobile PC shipments during the second quarter. Thanks chiefly to the success of the iPad 2, Apple managed to ship a reported 13.5m units, representing a rise of 136 percent from the year-ago quarter. Not a bad to start the day for the Cupertino gang.

According to DisplayResearch, the 13.5m units Apple shipped in the second quarter represent 21 percent of the mobile PC market. This information along with other manufacturers’ data is contained in the company’s “Quarterly Mobile PC shipment and Forecast Report” which it release today.

HTC rides money train through second quarter, revenues up 104 percent on the yearAll aboard, the HTC money train is now leaving the station. The Taiwanese giant announced net profits of NT$17.51 billion for the second quarter, up 18 percent from last quarter and 103 percent on the year. HTC shipped 12.1 million units in the quarter, up 25 percent over last and 124 percent on the year.

Motorola shipped 440,000 tablets and 4.4M smartphones in the second quarterMotorola Mobility came up big with an increase in handset, smartphone and tablet sales in the second quarter, but still managed to post a net loss. The company shipped 11 million handsets, including 4.4 million smartphones compared to 9.3 million handsets and 4.1 million smartphones in the first quarter. Motorola Xoom shipments nearly doubled, up from 250,000 in the first quarter to 440,000.

Thanks to revenue of £963 million for June, HTC was able to beat second quarter projections and calm fears that the company’s revenue would decline in 2011. Can anything stop HTC’s record revenues?

If this was an awards show and HTC was standing at the podium giving its acceptance speech for best second quarter revenues, the company would first like to thank Android. Way back in 2008 when Google introduced Android, HTC made the decision to welcome the platform with open arms. It’s that move that took the Taiwan manufacturer from just a company building smartphones to a household name.
