The Sony PS3 is to sell through its current stock of 80GB and 160GB units by this autumn, with both a price cut for the console and a revamp as the PS3 Slim arriving then, according to a normally accurate games industry “mole” based in the US.

With the PS3 losing out to the Xbox 360 and the Wii this Xmas, and reports suggesting that Sony will suffer a $1.1 billion loss this year, Analysts are predicting that the company must lower the price of the PS3 console to match its competitors.
Sony may be shaving a few quid off PS3 consoles in its own Sony Style stores, but it’s a far cry from the global price cuts we were hoping for. We’re now expecting to wait till March for those. Don’t worry though; Sony also won’t be pushing up prices either, a move that would seem unpleasant but actually justified in the present economic climate, as the Pound loses value against the Yen.
According to an anonymous source who apparently attended Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Staff Annual Briefing (held last Friday in London), Sony have big plans for both the PS3 and PSP in 2009.
If you’re holding out for the Nintendo Wii to get a good honest, credit crunching price cut, you may be waiting a while. Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata has said that he thinks price cuts are a “mistake”.
