The PS3’s PlayTV is getting a “major” new update later in 2010, and among the new features added to the Freeview tuner/PVR setup will be Facebook integration.
The news comes courtesy of a post on Sony’s official PS3 blog, in which PlayStation Network Project Manager James Thorpe outlines that “testing of some of the new features has already begun”.
Sony has just updated its PlayTV digital TV PVR for the PlayStation 3, adding built-in upscaling that should boost the detail and contrast of standard def pictures.
The PlayTV might be slightly delayed, but it’ll be cheaper than we thought, and pack HD tuners. Good news, right? Wrong. Sony’s decided to shove cumbersome DRM into the mix at the last minute, meaning shows can’t be transferred, and are tethered to one PS3.
We’ve been waiting for what seems like an age for Sony to launch PlayTV, its digital TV recorder module for the PS3 – but now the big S has finally fixed a date of 10th September.
Prime your PS3, and start marking programmes in the Radio Times: PlayTV will launch officially in September.
Make no mistake, PlayTV is high on our gadget wishlist, but at this rate we’ll have to move it to our Christmas list, or put it out of our minds altogether.
