Sony shifts 85,000 PlayTV boxes in the UK

Many of us already have freeview stacked in our tellys but that hasn’t stopped an impressive 85,000 PlayTV units being snapped in its first week by TV hungry UK gamers.

The PlayTV might be slightly delayed, but it’ll be cheaper than we thought, and pack HD tuners. Good news, right? Wrong. Sony’s decided to shove cumbersome DRM into the mix at the last minute, meaning shows can’t be transferred, and are tethered to one PS3.

When HMV let slip a March release date for Sony’s PlayTV add-on our excitement meter went berserk, but as the date sailed by with no sign of the PlayStation 3 TV tuner, we began to lose hope of it ever appearing.
