Sony plans to make a profit from the PlayStation Vita…eventually. The combination of packing in so much power into such a small package and keeping the price pushed down means that once again the console maker is taking a hit on every device it sells.
Just like the PS3 before it, the PlayStation Vita will cost more for Sony to produce than it makes back in hardware sales. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO, Kaz Hirai, confirmed the situation in an interview with Reuters Japan. He says Sony hopes to start turning a profit from the PlayStation Vita within three years.
Sony isn’t alone. Microsoft made a loss on the Xbox 360 for years. Nintendo tends to be the only console maker that does make a profit straight out of the gate so Sony’s new loss maker is essentially business as usual.
