Sony has announced that the remaining functionality left offline since the PlayStation Network hack will finally come back online in the UK, Europe and the US at the end of this week. That means the gaming giant has missed its previous deadline of the end of May but also that PlayStation Network users will be able to get their hands on Sony’s Welcome Back package compensation through the PlayStation Store.

If you’re a PS3 owner with a PlayStation Network account that means a choice of two games from a a selection of Dead Nation, inFamous, Little Big Planet, Wipeout HD and Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty.

PSP owners meanwhile get the choice of two games from LittleBigPlanet PSP, ModNation Racers, Pursuit Force and Killzone Liberation. If you weren’t already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you’ll also be offered 30 days free while subscribers will get 60 days free.

Fallout 3 DLC is coming to the PS3 at last as Microsoft’s iron grip on DLC exclusivity finally starts to loosen. Bethesda has announced that, starting this June, the three current Fallout 3 DLC packs – Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt and Broken Steel – will be reaching the PlayStation Store. Furthermore, there are two additional sets of DLC in the pipeline: Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta.

The new PSP still exists in rumour only (albeit a very convincing one), but it looks like publishers are already getting on board with the renewed focus on downloadable titles. Capcom appears to be the first to commit to it wholesale, promising up to 40 new PSP titles for the upgraded PSN service.

Sony drops UMD for Patapon 2

Sony has confirmed Patapon 2 for PSP is going on sale as download-only title in the US, with no UMD version going to retailers. It’s described as a “test case” to gauge player’s interest in digital only content.

Rumours are already suggesting that Sony’s next handheld, be it the PSP 2 or PSP-4000, will come without a UMD drive and this latest news certainly points in that direction. Read on for more.

Sony is in discussions with publishers about making their games back catalogues available to download for PSP, even if they’ve never featured on a Sony platform before. Sony has already used its PSP PlayStation Store service to push its own back catalogue, including an growing number of PSOne classics. However, these talks could potentially lead to the PSP being offered games originally found only on Nintendo or Sega platforms.
