The PlayStation Move – Sony’s attempt at beating Nintendo at its motion-sensing game – has shipped 10.5 million units since its launch in September 2010, Sony has confirmed today. The Japanese firm has branded the performance a ‘success’, although it stopped short of releasing actual sell-through figures. It’s quite possible that a large proportion of that 10.5 million is still sitting unsold on store shelves throughout the world.

While Sony has long said that the PS3 will have a 10-year lifespan – which would take us through to 2016 – chatter around the arrival of the PS4 has been picking up recently. Back in May, Sony CFO, Masaru Kato, confirmed that a big chunk of the company’s R&D budget is focused on building the next console.

Now DigiTimes has gone all out with claims that the PS4 will hit production at the end of 2011 in time for a 2012 launch. That would set Sony up for a head-to-head battle with the Nintendo Wii U. And that’s before we even consider the claim that it’ll come with motion control built in…

Now we could sneer at the PlayStation Move accessory but frankly we can’t pretend we don’t think it’s cool. The PlayStation Move Star Trek Phaser housing is set to make its debut in a new game being created with JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot production house.

The Star Trek PS3 prequel will be released in conjunction with the second flick in the rebooted franchise which means we’ll have to wait until next year to get our hands on the Phaser. As compensation you can check out the Star Trek game gameplay video after the break…

A recently uncovered patent, filed back in November 2009, shows a peripheral for the PSP with a built-in camera to use PlayStation Move controllers with the docked device. Here’s a Kinect hack that may not be so welcomed by Microsoft or Sony for that matter: Shantanu Goel hooked Kinect up to his PS3. The setup is a little bit complex and janky with the Kinect hooked up to his laptop which is running the PrimeSense Kinect drivers. No PlayStation Move involved!
