Nokia may have binned its N-Gage gaming brand, but it’s not stopped the mighty Finns from pushing ahead with some next-gen mobile gaming. Espoo’s chief games bod says some top new titles will still hit the Ovi Store before year end, showing off new technology too!

One of our very favourite music apps, Shazam, has just landed on Nokia’s brand new Ovi Store. Shazam is a music discovery tool that enables you to hold your phone out whenever you hear a tune you want to identify, using that snippet to work out what it is from its 8 million track database.It’ll probably have a tough time with John Cage’s 4’33” though.
Ovi Store, Nokia’s app and entertainment download store, rolled out last week to mixed reactions. Nokia owners worldwide rushed on to store.ovi.com to check out the wares on the Finnish phone company’s virtual counter, causing serious server problems which Nokia later apologised for.
Now that the initial stampede has slowed, we’ve had a chance to get to grips with Ovi Store nice and proper, and we reckon that even though it’s early days yet, it’s got the potential to take on the might of Apple’s iPhone App Store and even tempt some away and make the jump to Symbian. Nokia has used the inaugural Nokia Developer Summit to unveil the N97 Beta Software Development Kit (SDK) and a competition for programmers to create ‘widgets’ – mini apps that can run on the N97′s home screen.
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic may still be missing its initial letter but, by way of compensation, Nokia has just issued a major software update that fixes some bugs and adds a healthy dollop of new features to enhance the phone.
