Now that Ovi Maps is available across all four platforms (Symbian, Windows Phone, Android, iOS) will it replace Google Maps?

Ovi Maps doesn't have a cycling mode, but it hardly needs one when the driving mode is so well made. Easily capable of cutting your commute by bike, it has some major benefits over Ovi Maps' pedestrian mode too, which makes it the go-to choice when navigating on the road. Maps react quickly when you’re moving and you’ll be directed the correct way down one-way streets. Just make sure you switch off the motorway function, and you're all set to pedal! What you’ll need We used the Nokia E72 to take Ovi Maps' free navigation for a spin. It’s ideally suited to biking. The aluminium casing makes it tough enough to survive the daily commute and even stand up to bumps and knocks. We don't advise wearing earphones when cycling, as you'll need all of your senses to stay safe. Instead crank up the volume to get verbal directions from your handset’s speakers. The E72 we took for a spin was loud enough for us to make 0ut directions, and the on-screen routes bright and clear. You could also switch to beeps which indicate when it’s time to turn, and allow you to glance at the screen when necessary. The E72's hardware buttons are its killer feature, since they let you use Ovi Maps while wearing cycling gloves. You don’t have to be restricted to a Nokia E72 to get free maps, though. The following Nokia phones are also compatible: Nokia X6. Nokia N97 Mini. Nokia N97. Nokia N86. Nokia E72. Nokia E71. Nokia E66. Nokia E55. Nokia E52. Nokia C5. Nokia 6730 Classic. Nokia 6720 Classic. Nokia 6710. Nokia 5800. Nokia 5235. Nokia 5230. Find your favourites You can save frequently used journeys like your commute as favourites in Nokia navigation, either directly on your mobile or via maps.ovi.com. To add your favourite journeys to your Nokia phone, just hook it up to your PC, fire up Ovi Maps and press Sync, or Synchronise with Ovi.com from within its menus. See the world The onscreen directions in Nokia’s mobile navigation software are excellent, with clear maps and a coloured marker highlighting the direction you need to travel in. Even on a device such as the Nokia E7 which has a relatively small screen, it’s still simple to see where you have to go. Look ahead The Ovi Maps digital compass keeps you on track by showing you the direction you should be headed in. Configuring it is simple. When you first fire up Ovi Maps, you'll be asked to wave your Nokia in a figure of eight which calibrates the sensors. To the left or to the right One of the most invaluable features in Nokia's free mapping software is lane guidance. This shows you where you should be on larger roads and when you're approaching roundabouts, helping you stay safe and get the jump on the rest of the traffic. Find your way When moving through traffic, it's easy to take a wrong turn on your bike. If you do, Nokia's free navigation will quickly and automatically reroute you, sending you down new streets to make sure you get where you were originally going. Click Here/0.jpg" width="150" />

Free mobile navigation means Ovi Maps is an ideal tool for a cycling commuter. Simply fix your Nokia to the handlebars, crank up the volume and off you go. The easy to follow directions and other advanced features could seriously shorten your commute. Read on to find out how.

What you’ll need To use the latest version of Ovi Maps, which offers completely free navigation, you’ll need one of Nokia’s smartphones. You can use touchscreen or non-touchscreen handsets. We chose the Nokia X6 and Nokia E72. The Nokia E72 is one of the latest non-touchscreen smartphones in Nokia’s range and is perfect for mobile navigation. The big benefit it offers over most touchscreen handsets is the ability to use it your gloves on which can come in handy in chillier conditions. The Nokia X6 is even better at showing the way with Nokia navigation, since it has a huge capacitive touchscreen display. The larger screen means it can genuinely rival dedicated sat-navs and is great for viewing free maps. There are plenty of other devices you can use Ovi Maps with, including the following handsets: Nokia X6. Nokia N97 Mini. Nokia N97. Nokia N86. Nokia E72. Nokia E71. Nokia E66. Nokia E55. Nokia E52. Nokia C5. Nokia 6730 Classic. Nokia 6720 Classic. Nokia 6710. Nokia 5800. Nokia 5235. Nokia 5230. Find your way The first thing you’ll need to do when using free navigation from Ovi Maps is to set up your Nokia’s digital compass. This helps the device know which way you’re facing and makes it easier to navigate. Waving the phone around in a figure of eight calibrates the sensors. Pick a place To set up a route using Ovi Maps, either type in the destination or open the map view and click the area where you want to go. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the middle of a pedestrian area, a park or a shopping centre – the free maps inside your Nokia will do their best to get you there, using routes other satnavs can't, such as tunnels, bridges or walkways. As the crow flies Nokia offers a Straight Line mode for Ovi Maps, providing ‘as the crow flies’ navigation which lets you take advantage of tracks and fields. To activate it, go to Settings, select Walk then Straight Line as a preferred route. It's really useful in the countryside because it doesn’t take buildings, rivers or other physical barriers into account. It'll also come in handy when you're navigating sprawling shopping centres too. As long as your Nokia can receive a GPS signal, it'll always point the way back to your car! A 3rd dimension As one of the most advanced satnav products on the market, Ovi Maps is as attractive as it is usable, with stunning 3D landmarks highlighted on the move. Head towards somewhere built-up like London's Piccadilly Circus and it makes it very clear which route you need to take. 3D landmarks are also available in other countries. Retrace your steps Ovi Maps watches your progress, leaving virtual footprints on the map to show where you've been. Use them to retrace your steps if you get lost or simply want to go home. Your past steps are highlighted as red dots onscreen. Using Ovi Maps really couldn’t be easier.
