Last night, we attended the launch of Windows Phone 8 – the cherry on the top of an image overhaul Microsoft’s been trudging towards for two years. That’s it now; the second coming of Windows is here – desktop, tablet, mobile and games console all singing from the same hymn sheet.

Thing is, as nice as it all is, there’s no escaping the fact that last night caused a lot of confusion. Everyone in the room shared the same odd sense of Déjà vu, stemming from the fact that we were attending the launch for something that’d, well… that had already been launched some months prior.

It’s called the double-launch effect, and it’s a PR’s worst nightmare…

Update: Nintendo has annoucned that the Wii U will launch in the UK on November 30th.

After all the fuss about the iPhone 5 last night, it’s easy to forget that there are some other sizable launches on the cards in 2012. The Wii U is one such biggie, and Nintendo will be hoping it’ll light up the Christmas console charts. It’s just had its price and release date outed in its native Japan. What does that mean for us? Nintendo has announced its financial results for the first quarter ending at the end of June, and things aren’t looking too rosy.

The company lost 10.3 billion yen – that’s $132m, or £85m in proper money. Though that’s actually an improvement on the same period last year, when it lost 37.7 billion yen. Tough times.

The Wii U will launch without support for a second GamePad controller, according to Nintendo spokesman Reggie Fils-Aime. That is, the console will physically support a second controller but Nintendo doesn’t expect developers to add support for a second control tablet until “well after launch”.
