Nikon’s countdown clock was actually out by several hours, but it’s finally made those mirrorless camera systems official anyway: behold the Nikon J1 and V1, snappers with compact size and snazzy lenses you can switch out at will. They can even take photos before you press the shutter button – seriously.
Oh ho. What’s this? Nikon is teasing a launch of something online over at the dubiously named iamcomings.com, with a countdown ending at 4pm tomorrow UK time. It doesn’t usually resort to this for a fancy new DSLR though – so could this finally be the Nikon mirrorless camera system we’ve heard so much about?
Though Nikon outed a slew of new Coolpix cameras this morning, the Nikon Coolpix AW100 deserves a story of its own. The company’s first rugged camera, it’s built for adventure and boasts a case that’ll take it 10m underwater, allow it to survive a drop of 1.5m and keep snapping in temperatures as low as -10°C. Its most delicate areas areas (the battery compartment, SD card slot, mini HDMI connector and USB/audio video connector) are also kept undercover to keep them safe from the elements.

Not content to let Sony hog the limelight with the Sony NEX-7 and Sony NEX-5N, Nikon has revealed an avalanche of new Coolpix cameras today. Heading up the pack is the 10.1MP Nikon Coolpix P7100, the successor to the Nikon Coolpix P7000, which follows its predecessor’s example by packing serious specs into a compact package.
It’s joined by the Nikon Coolpix S6200 and Nikon Coolpix S8200, a pair of 16MP superzoom snappers, the skinny 14MP Nikon Coolpix S4150 and the punchy 16MP Nikon Coolpix S6150. We’ve corralled all the specs for this cavalcade of Coolpix compacts after the break…
The Nikon Coolpix 3100 is the successor to last year’s S3000, and as such it shares a lot of its predecessor’s qualities – it’s a cheap and cheerful compact that’ll fit easily in any pocket. And it comes at a price that’s easy on the wallet. But that’s not to say its specs are straight from the bargain bin, far from it: 14-megapixel sensor, 720p HD movie recording, and a 5x optical zoom.
