Google Maps Android is set for a major upgrade with faster map rendering, new 3D buildings, offline caching to keep you navigating even inside or in low signal areas and compass skills to orientate the map. Google promises 3D buildings will be more accessible in the next version of Google Maps Android and that maps will load far faster as they require 100 times less data. Google has launched Google Navigation: walking today, with tweaks specifically designed to appeal to pedestrians, ramblers and those too boozed up to use Google Navigation in their car.

Google said it has found that while people used turn by turn navigation whilst driving, they also use the service whilst walking. To fill the gap in its service, it’s launched turn by turn navigation that’s been tweaked for walkers.

Satnav specialist Garmin has just rolled out a pair of new ultra-skinny GPS devices. The Garmin Nuvi 1200 and 1300 are designed to be taken to the streets, sporting new pedestrian navigation functions through optional CityXplorer maps.
