Firefox is planning a mobile operating system, according to the Mozilla Developer Group, and it’s looking like it could be even more open source than Android. That’s right, more customisation, and more power to you.

Mozilla, home to the brains behind Firefox, is planning to build its very own mobile OS. The project called Boot to Gecko or B2G broke cover on the Mozilla Developer Group yesterday. Its aim is to create a standalone operating system that will use web technologies to deliver all of its applications.
Think that sounds a lot like what Google is trying to do with Chrome OS? Well, you’d be right but the difference is that Mozilla is focused on mobile and, interestingly, it plans to build Boot to Gecko on an Android foundation. Could this be the truly open source OS many people have been craving?
Firefox 4 launched yesterday, and since going live it has already been downloaded 5 million time – giving it a share of just under 2 percent of the worldwide web browser market already. Today, the first developer release of Mozilla’s new Web App Store was unveiled. As a direct competitor to Google’s Chrome Web App Store, the battle begins in 2011.
The latest Firefox 4 beta includes a new privacy feature which is set to irritate web advertising firms. Firefox 4 beta 11 includes a new Do Not Track setting which allows users to opt-out of ad tracking cookies. The only problem is it won’t work just yet. Until the major advertising firms, Google and other browser makers buy in to the feature, it’s a toggle box wishing it would work. Let’s hope the rest of the industry gets on board too.
