Our love of Minecraft is pretty well established (just check out our original Minecraft review) so a project to make creations from within the game real is right up our street. Created by Cody Sumter and Jason Boggess at the MIT Media Lab, Minecraft.Print uses the game as a 3D modelling tool.

Once they’ve created something impressive in Minecraft, they place obsidian, diamond, gold and iron blocks at each corner. Those markers allow the Minecraft.Print script to scan the map and produce file ready to be fed to a 3D printer like the Makerbot Thing-o-matic

UPDATE: Mojang has confirmed that Minecraft Pocket Edition will hit the the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play before any other phone, taking advantage of its controls. No release date just yet, sadly.

We love Minecraft and its creator Notch isn’t above throwing the virtual cat among the pixellated pigeons. He’s been talking at GDC and made some arguments that big game developers probably won’t like. He says: “Piracy is not theft. If you steal a car, the original is lost. If you copy a game, there are simply more of them in the world. There is no such thing as a ‘lost sale’. Is a bad review a lost sale? What about a missed ship date?”

Notch thinks pirates should be seen as potential customers and that frequently updated games like Minecraft keep them official better than bashing pirates. But is he right? Do you think piracy is killing gaming? Or should games companies simply work harder?
