Panasonic has ripped the covers off of its much-rumoured Lumix GX-1 Micro Four Thirds camera this morning. A release date has been set for the Olympus E-PL3, a more compact and modern looking mid-range spin off of the PEN E-P3. As the latest addition to the Olympus PEN lineup, the E-PL3 will launch alongside the new VF-3 electronic viewfinder this September. With four color choices (black, white, red, silver) and two camera bundles to choose from, the micro four thirds game now has a new challenger.
DSLR purists might snub at the thought of a micro four third camera being perfect, but for those keen on HD video and capturing quality shots without carrying around endless amounts of gear, the M4/3 is a godsend. The Panasonic Lumix GH1, once hacked, set the video bar with 50 Mbps+ AVCHD capture, rightfully earning the title ‘creative hybrid’. The Sony NEX-7 looks to up the ante on the imaging front.

The Pentax Q has emerged from the labs with its makers claiming its the smallest interchangeable lens camera yet. That would mean it’s stolen the crown from the Panasonic Lumix GF3 which was outed less than two weeks ago. But Pentax hasn’t given us details on the Q’s size and weight yet so the jury’s still out.
The retro-looking snapper achieves its slight size by ditching an optical viewfinder, mirror box, focusing plate and autofocus sensor. Those components are what add to the size of a common-or-garden DSLR but losing does lead to some compromises. Still, the Pentax Q has plenty of other tricks to deploy…
