LittleBigPlanet passed a huge milestone this week, with user created levels of the cutesy platformer passing the one million mark. But Sony wasn’t content just crowing about the Sackboy stats, oh no: it also let slip that a major announcement is due next month. Now what could that be?
Every LittleBigPlanet level created by the game’s fans will soon get its own URL. That means gamers would be able to more directly promote their levels, send them to friends etc. “Rather than saying, ‘Please search for my level,’ you can just say, ‘Here’s a link’,” said Alex Evans, co-founder of Media Molecule, the development studio behind LittleBigPlanet.
LittleBigPlanet’s next game is to move in a “surprising” direction, according to Alex Evans, co-founder of Media Molecule, the company behind LittleBigPlanet on the Sony PS3. In a wide-ranging interview, Evans has revealed tantalising details about the future of the LittleBigPlanet series, as well as possibly dropping a hint on when to expect Sony to cut the price of its PS3 console.

LittleBigPlanet, Sony’s critically-lauded PS3 “play, create, share” platform game, is headed to the PSP. And, unsurprisingly, it emerges that Media Molecule, the company behind LittleBigPlanet on the PS3 (and helping with the production of the game on the PSP) is exploring ways of sharing levels and other content between the two games.
Users who have put hours and days of work into creating LittleBigPlanet levels have reacted with fury to their “moderation” (read: deletion) by server administrators. Sony/ Media Molecule are apparently deleting user-created levels for their game not just on the basis of rude pictures or sticking a willy on their main character, but also for copyright infringement.
Sony and Media Molecule are planning to take LittleBigPlanet’s user-created content to a higher level of customisation by Xmas. Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans has revealed that a patch will soon allow you to upload images from your PS3 hard drive and use them when designing and building your own levels and items. Those errant Qur’an references might soon be the least of LBP’s worries…
Oh dear. Sony’s desperate last minute attempts to avert LittleBigPlanet controversy are coming back to bite it. While recalling the game in the eleventh hour was supposed to stop players being offended, one group is taking issue with what it perceives as Sony choosing to censor the game on their behalf.
