If you haven’t been able to install Mac OS X Lion from the Mac App Store, Apple has now added the Mac OS X Lion USB thumb drive to its online store.

You’ll pay a penalty for not having high speed broaband or a bricks and mortar Apple Store to grab the download at though. The Mac OS X Lion USB thumb drive costs £55, a cool £34 more than the software will set you back in the Mac App Store.

Here’s a situation we’re bound to see repeated a lot in the next few months. Google has kicked out a Chrome for Mac update to its developer channel in the wake of OS X Lion and things have got a little confusing. As well as removing window scrollbars by default and making them appear only when you’re scrolling, which mimicks the look of other Lion apps including Safari, Google has returned gesture controls to the browser. But there’s a slight problem.

In OS X Snow Leopard, Chrome let you flip through pages with three-finger swipes but that was broken when Apple took that gesture for moving between desktops and full-screen apps in Lion. Google has replaced the gesture with two-finger swipes but they’re now effectively backwards in Apple’s new world of inverted scrolling.

Since this version of Chrome is just a developer build, we’re sure Google will add the option to reverse the gestures in the full release but this definitely once again flags up the issue with Apple suddenly changing the conventions!

Apple plans to set iCloud live for both Mac OS X Lion and iOS 5 in the autumn but developers got their hands on the desktop version over the weekend. Leapfrogging straight to Mac OS X 10.7.2, Apple has released the update to developers purely to use for testing the OS’s iCloud support.

The version does not appear to address any bugs or issues in Mac OS X Lion but instead adds iCloud to the Mail, Contacts & Calendars control panel. From there users will be able to choose what they want to be synced to the cloud and manage storage and backups.

Since Apple has badged the developer release as 10.7.2, it’s likely that Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 will be an update for the rest of us with bug fixes and tweaks.

Another day, another rumour about when we can expect Mac OS X Lion and the much-touted new MacBook Air to be revealed. While Apple has confirmed that it will unleash the new OS this month, it has kept schtum about precisely when it’ll be uncaged. Last week saw several false Lion alarms and no sign of the new hardware.

Now new reports are claiming that we’ll see Mac OS X Lion and the new MacBook Air tomorrow. Once again the rumours are pegged on chatter that Apple Store employees will be prepping stores for the launch overnight. Apple has it quarterly earnings call later today which could make Wednesday an ideal time to release new products but we’d still say don’t hold your breath just yet.

Though Mac OS X Lion didn’t launch this week as many, including us, had speculated, the first apps with support for the new OS have started to appear in the Mac App Store. Apple put out its call for Mac OS X Lion apps at the beginning of this week.

OS X Daily News discovered popular Mac word game, WordCrasher, had been updated to add Mac OS X Lion-only features including fullscreen mode, Resume and Versions. MacStories also spotted a clutch of other apps hitting the store with new Mac OS X Lion friendly builds.

The consensus is now that Mac OS X Lion should roar into view next week but we’ll reserve judgment until Apple tells us for sure. Find out about all the new features with our Mac OS X Lion guide
