Gawd bless the folks at iFixit. Once again they’ve taken their cabinet of tools to the latest Apple releases and revealed a useful secret about the new Mac Mini. While Apple offers a twin 500GB hard drives in the Mac Mini Server version and the option of adding an additional 256GB Solid State Drive to the standard Mac Mini for an eyewatering additional cost of £600, slipping in a second hard drive on your own looks incredibly simple.
The iFixit teardown shows the ample space inside the new Mac Mini’s aluminium shell for a second hard drive and notes that there’s an extra SATA connector waiting there to be used. To add an extra hard drive yourself, you’ll need to find a SATA cable but the iFixit investigation discovered that there’s no proprietary screws or glue to worry about when opening up the machine. It also says RAM upgrades should be doddle too. If you’re up for doing a little DIY, you could save hundreds while making your own souped-up Mac Mini.
