So, the battle lines have been drawn. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be out just a day after the Nokia Lumia 800 lands in the UK. And while it might seem obvious that the Android-packing smartphone will be the ultimate winner, this marks the beginning of a proper test for Google’s ace operating system.

Windows Phone hasn’t managed to gain much traction since its launch just a year ago. So this really is its first proper foray into the mobile big league. It’s the key focus of Nokia’s smartphone division, whereas before it’s been a secondary concern for mobile makers. This is going to be a fascinating contest and here’s why.

Since Nokia and Microsoft confirmed their mobile alliance back in February, there’s been an endless amount written about whether this represents the smartest move for the Finns and if they’ve handled the transition properly. It’s hard to deny the fact it’s taken too long for the alliance to bear fruit, in the form of the new Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710.

But look beyond that and it’s clear that this alliance could prove to be the silver bullet that Nokia’s needed ever since the first iPhone landed nearly five years ago. And here’s why I think it’ll be proved that Nokia has made the right call.

Here it is folks, the new Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone, or as Nokia CEO Stephen Elop puts it, the first “real Windows Phone”. It’s not exactly been a secret these last few months, but now we’ve got the precise details on it. As expected, it adopts an almost identical shell to the doomed but wonderful Nokia N9, made out of machined polycarbonate, and sports a 3.7-inch Clear Black AMOLED screen, 1.4GHz processor and 16GB of internal storage.
