Long term evolution. The term akin to the biggest marketing play of 2011, “4G”. As a fourth generation wireless technology, LTE promises unparalleled speeds in both uplink and downlink, thereby transforming our smartphones into truly portable broadband connections. Theoretical speeds aside, we’re on a quest to find out if LTE delivers the goods.
In the US, Verizon Wireless has created the only nationwide 4G LTE network. T-Mobile USA and AT&T are planning a similar roll out, but for the time being rely on HSPA+ as their 4G technology. Meanwhile Sprint’s 4G WiMax network was the first on the scene.
