Apple’s set to launch a streaming video service as well as iTunes music in the cloud, according to the latest theory around the firm’s recent strategic moves. Why and how would Jobs and co create a streaming video iTunes?
The theory, put forward by Wired, is that Apple’s huge new data centre, move into video cameras with the iPhone 3GS and iPod Nano and purchase of Lala all add up to a plan to both stream music and video.
The last element of Apple’s video streaming plan was put in place this week with approval for live-video streaming iPhone apps. The feature had previously been hidden in the API but now apps from Ustream and Knocking Live Video have hit the iTunes App Store.
Add the streaming video and the rumoured Apple tablet to iPhones and iPods with video capabilities and Apple will be in a position to create real-time video sharing services. It’ll be a playground for citizen journalists, rampant narcissists and people who just want to share their videos with their family and friends.
At the launch of the latest iPod Nano in September, Steve Jobs made it clear that Apple wants a slice of the video market: “We want to get in on this.” So it’s not crazy to think that it’s recent moves point to a streaming video future.
