Are you dreading the day when the Wikipedia appeal banner makes its return? Does the phrase “A personal appeal from Jimmy Wales” give you nightmarish visions of the penetrating stare of Jimmy Wales driving you to involuntarily throw hard cash at the screen in an attempt to make his face go away? Well, turns out that banner has been tested alongside a whole host of other banners, and it’s his face that was most successful in getting you to dig deep.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has been answering questions over on Formspring this morning. One answer that surprised us, hidden among the “do you like Vespas?” “Have you been to Greece?” “Have you been to Vermont”, and so on, was to the question: “What’s your browser homepage?” Wales answered: “Bing.com – they have pretty pictures every day.” Aw, Jimmy! He didn’t give a full Bing endorsement though, and apparently the pretty pictures aren’t enough for him to actually use Microsoft’s search engine, because he went on to say that he still uses Google for most of his searching.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has decided to close down the Wikia Search project citing money issues and low traffic. The free open source search engine aimed to take on the likes of Google and Yahoo with a system that allowed users to rate, edit and enhance the results themselves.
The Wikia Search page has now begun wrapping up and redirecting users to other Wikia.com projects.
