Apple has opened up iTunes LP and iTunes Extras creation to independent developers meaning anyone can now create interactive digital extras for music or films on the iTunes store. We revealed that Apple was promising to open up iTunes LP creation way back in October.
Apple has confirmed that it’s opening up iTunes LP to indie labels the world over, unleashing the power of its new premium format. iTunes LP has been in the centre of a controversy storm since one indie record label head claimed Apple was keeping the new album artwork format for the majors only, but Apple’s just promised to open it up to any music maker that wants to have a go.
UPDATE: Apple has got in touch with the following statement: “We’re releasing the open specs for iTunes LP soon, allowing both major and indie labels to create their own. There is no production fee charged by Apple.”
