Apple has patented a transforming universal charging dock which can change to accommodate the shape of the object being charged. An Apple patent detailing the ideas, filed in June 2008, has just emerged.
Apple’s idea for the universal iPod/iPhone dock uses an elastic sponge-like substance that conforms to the device. It appears that the substance would retain its shape or be reset using a button on the front of the device.
If Apple launched the universal iPod/iPhone dock, it could spell doom for the thousands of accessory manufacturers who rely on the need for different chargers for different types and generations of iPod.
Given Apple’s customary blanket of secrecy, it’s not clear when or if the universal iPod/iPhone charging dock will be released. We’d certainly be interested in snapping one up.
