When Apple said “a future product transition” is due in September during its earnings call last week, the general consensus was that it meant the iPhone 5 launch. It’s not that surprising then to hear new claims, purportedly from Chinese suppliers, suggesting that Apple is stocking up on the new model.

The China Times says an initial test shipment of 400,000 handsets has been sent to Apple in preparation for a launch in the second week of September. It goes on to say that the sample is part of a production run of 4 million. Looking at the sales of the iPhone 4, that number actually sounds quite low. FaceTime is set to fly onto your TV screen with iOS 5. iPhone owners playing around with iOS 5 beta 3 have discovered that includes FaceTime AirPlay mirroring.

The feature means with an Apple TV or other AirPlay-enabled device hooked up to the screen in your living room, you’ll be able to beam the image from a FaceTime call to it.

As you can see from the picture above, the VGA resolution of the iPhone 4′s front-facing camera looks a little bit blocky blown up on the big screen but an upgraded sensor for the iPhone 5 could easily fix that. Even without it, using AirPlay to create a FaceTime TV is just really nifty.

While there are plenty of iPhone 5 rumours to chew on, The Wall Street Journal – frequently pegged as a conduit for Apple controlled leaks – has moved on to the iPhone 6 already. Nestled near the end of a story on iPhone 5 speculation, it says Apple has a major revamp in store for the 2012 model.
