When the original iPhone arrived it was all about web apps but since Apple launched the iTunes App Store the focus has clearly shifted. Now some developers are claiming that Apple is deliberately hobbling the ability of HTML5 web apps to run as full screen apps from the homescreen.

According to claims by The Register when a web app is saved to the home screen in iOS 4.3, it runs about 2x to 2.5x slower than in Mobile Safari. The reason appears to be that the new Nitro JavaScript engine that hit the OS with the iOS 4.3 update does not activate for full screen web apps launched from the home screen. Is this a cockup or a conspiracy?

7digital, one of the three of biggest music download services along with Amazon and iTunes, is upgrading its apps. If you’re running Android you’ll now get scrobbling to Last.fm (making it easier for you to knock Lady Gaga off your top spot perhaps?) and 7digital is also adding support for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and BlackBerry 9780.

There’s also a nifty new HTML5 mobile page, which means you can stream full tracks through the mobile site, instead of having to go through an app.

Windows Phone 7 updates are on the cards and a new report says the first major software update won’t arrive until August or September 2011. The mobile webapp version of Google’s ever-changing email service has grabbed whole fists full of new features to make surfing your emails via Safari on iPhone or Android’s myriad of browsers a whole lot better. Hop to Gmail with your phone browser and you’ll be greeted with the new user interface.
