Just over a month after Amazon changed its Kindle iPhone and iPad apps to comply with Apple’s new rules on in-app payments, the iTunes App Store has seen its first major casualty from the policy change. The Financial Times’ iPhone and iPad apps have been removed from the store. The FT says its main disagreement with Apple was over access to subscriber data but the ability to send users to an external subscription page was clearly a factor.

The FT is now encouraging readers to use its HTML5 web app instead. A spokesperson told paidContent: “The FT iPad and iPhone apps will no longer be available to new users through iTunes. We are directing readers to the FT‘s new web app available at app.ft.com. iTunes will remain an important channel for new and existing advertising based apps.”

Amazon has quietly outed a way to get round Apple’s restrictions on iOS in-app purchases: the Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader. We thought Amazon had simply acquiesced to Apple when it killed the store link in its Kindle iPhone and iPad apps but it had a Plan B in the works. The Kindle Cloud Reader is a totally web-based version of the eBook reader app that works with Chrome and Safari and comes optimised for the iPad. The iPhone isn’t supported yet but that can only be a matter of time.

While the Kindle Cloud Reader allows you to read your books online, you can also download them for offline reading using HTML5 or a Chrome browser extension. We’ve tried it out this morning and it works like a charm. The ability to switch between the Kindle Store and your library on the iPad is also a treat. It’s worth noting that reading books in Kindle Cloud Reader counts towards your device limit but since that’s usually six different devices you’re unlikely to hit it.

The Kindle Cloud Reader is a really slick bit of thinking from Amazon and you can try it out for yourself at the link below. Hit the headline and jump into the comments to give us your review.

The latest Google doodle celebrates the work of mobile sculpture inventor, Alexander Calder, on what would have been his 113th birthday. It goes one step further than the playable Pac-Man Google doodle and the strummable Les Paul Google doodle by accurately responding to real world physics.

Using HTML5 Canvas, the image of the mobile moves when you click and drag the individual elements, simulating the momentum and interaction you’d get with the piece in a real life sculpture.

Most impressively, if your laptop has an accelerometer inside, rocking your machine makes the image swing with it. There are conflicting reports on which browsers work with this Google doodle but we found both Firefox 5 and Chrome play along nicely. Check it out and notice how the shadow underneath the search box moves too!

Cats are beguiled by the iPad screen but batting at Angry Birds with their paw won’t get them very far. But pet food maker Friskies has created a set of three HTML5 iPad games built specifically for feline Apple fans: Cat Fishing, Party Mix Up and Tasty Treasures Hunt.

All three games feature bright shapes moving around in just the right way to lure a moggy’s attention and graphics that respond to paw touches. You can see tech kitties at play in the video after the break and get the link to the games there too. We’d love to see what your cat makes of them.
