Some examples of the new iMac pack a problematic hard drive. Apple has announced that it will replace the Seagate 1TB hard drives used in some 21.5in and 27in iMac models sold between May 2011 and July 2011 due to a risk that they could “fail under certain conditions”.
Apple says it has contacted affected iMac owners who provided valid email address when registering their machine but you can check yourself to see if your system is affected. Head to this page and enter your iMac’s serial number to find out.
Apple will replace affected drives until July 23, 2012. Getting a new drive doesn’t extend the standard iMac warranty and you’ll need to back up the contents of your hard drive before you let anyone meddle with your machine.
