Google Music’s launch in the US has prompted much thought on whether we’re about to see a genuine shift away from an iTunes dominated download market. As Google’s Android phones proliferate, with 200 million handsets now out in the wild, the chance for Mountain View to wrest control of the music industry from its deadly Cupertino rival is obvious.

It’s clear that some of Google Music’s ideas are laudable. Its artists hub will be vital for helping nascent talent promote itself and sell its own content through a viable and safe platform. However, the sad fact is that this aspect cannot cover up some serious issues with Google Music.

Google Music ditched its beta tag last night, with the Big G revealing its own dedicated music store for both the web and Android, sitting alongside its existing cloud storage and streaming offering. But as ever, there’s a snag: UK users can’t play nice with Google’s new MP3 store, and there’s no news on when it’ll fling open its virtual doors to music fans in Blighty.

Changes to copyright law will make it a lot easier for cloud music services including Google Music, Amazon Cloud Player and the iTunes in the cloud feature of Apple’s iCloud to launch in the UK. Business Secretary, Vince Cable, will announce the proposals in a speech at the British Library today.

The changes also aim to finally make it legal to copy music and DVDs to your computer or MP3 player. Laughably, it’s still technically illegal to transfer content from its original format to another for personal use, which means anyone who owns an iPod has been a lawbreaker for years. Amazon has taken aim at Apple’s iCloud and Google Music by adding unlimited music storage to its Amazon Cloud Player service. The deal will allow users to stash as many MP3s and AAC as they like in their virtual locker.

The deal, which Amazon says is for a limited time, applies to all new Cloud Drive storage plans from the lowest $20 for 20GB plan up. It means music files won’t be counted as part of the storage space. Even if customers don’t purchase a paid plan, any MP3s bought from Amazon can be uploaded for free.

While iCloud’s iTunes Match feature won’t upload files, its copy of a user’s music library will be limited to 25,000 songs while Google Music imposes a cap of 20,000. Amazon has also outed a Cloud Player iPad web app. Sadly, Amazon hasn’t revealed plans to bring Cloud Player and Cloud Drive to the UK yet.

UPDATE: UK Motorola Xoom owners on Twitter are reporting that they’re receiving Google Music too. The intrigue!

The Google Music streaming service isn’t available in the UK, but lo if it isn’t being pushed out to select Android handsets here in Blighty. Not only that, but Google Books is coming along for the ride. Have you got them yet?

The cloud music wars are about to begin in earnest and one way of looking at the battle is to say that Apple is already behind. Amazon and Google have got their options out into the world first with the Amazon Cloud Drive and Google Music both offering music lockers located up in the fluffy white virtual clouds.

But Apple wasn’t even close to being first out of the gate with the iPod and first mover advantage is often overblown. Because while Amazon and Google jumped without the labels onside, Apple is playing the long game…
