Apple iCloud update: Google Earth goes live, domain registered, video streaming confirmedApple’s iCloud headquarters is all but confirmed following this morning’s reveal on Google Earth. The company’s mysterious $1b data center in North Carolina has pulled back the blurry curtain and now renders in crisp satellite detail. In addition to the North Carolina house of tech, Apple has reportedly paid $4.5m for the icloud.com domain, now secured until 2018.

It’s been quietly developing in the corner while Google Maps does cartwheels in the spotlight but Nokia’s Ovi Maps has just jumped forward with a new Google Earth-battling option. The Ovi Maps 3D beta is free to grab now and uses Navteq’s maps and a pinch of software smarts to offer up a new 3D view for cities that you can swoop around.

Nokia hasn’t revealed much about how the Ovi Maps 3D option works but it certainly looks like a smart alternative to Google Earth’s Sim-City-gets-real schtick. You can grab Ovi Maps 3D for yourself at the link below…

We love Google Demo Slam, it’s a treaure trove of Google-inspired weirdness. Our favourite this week is Google Earth sky diving. The video, which you can see after the break, shows a band of brilliant Japanese teenagers doing Google Earth sky diving which essentially means using a huge projector screen and Google Earth to simulate chucking yourself out of a plane.

A laptop running Google Earth is made to zoom through the different levels of Google Earth as if the virtual sky divers are falling from a great height. For added realism, the Google Earth sky divers have stuck on some fans to get that rushing through the air feeling. Read on to see Google Earth sky diving in action. Warning: it is odd.
