We love Minecraft and its creator Notch isn’t above throwing the virtual cat among the pixellated pigeons. He’s been talking at GDC and made some arguments that big game developers probably won’t like. He says: “Piracy is not theft. If you steal a car, the original is lost. If you copy a game, there are simply more of them in the world. There is no such thing as a ‘lost sale’. Is a bad review a lost sale? What about a missed ship date?”

Notch thinks pirates should be seen as potential customers and that frequently updated games like Minecraft keep them official better than bashing pirates. But is he right? Do you think piracy is killing gaming? Or should games companies simply work harder?

Microsoft to unveil Gears of War Kinect and Windows Kinect SDK at GDC?In the world of Xbox 360 shooters there’s Gears of War and then there’s everything else. Some may argue that Halo is the superior shooter, but fans of Quake, Duke Nukem and Doom, know all too well that Gears is where the action’s at. At next week’s Game Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, the Redmond camp is expected to unveil Gears of War Kinect and possibly a Windows 7 Kinect SDK.

Sony has promised to “match” the development costs of PS3 downloadable games, distributed across its PlayStation Network, with “guaranteed royalties”. Meaning that small games companies will not make a loss if they sign up exclusively to the Sony PS3.

Ovi Store details trickle out

Bioshock for iPhone? It’s already wowed PC and Xbox players, then it stunned PS3 fans, but its next port of call for Bioshock could be something considerably smaller – Apple’s iPhone.

Mobile games maker IG Fun is already at the helm of the mobile version of Bioshock, including a 2D version, so the stretch to the more powerful iPhone should actually make life easier. We’d still expect loads of nifty touchscreen actions though.
